STRYCO
AF SERIES FLASH BUTT WELDERS WITH STRYCOMATIC DRIVE
20 TO 250 KVA

STRYCO AF SERIES FLASH-BUTT WELDERS employ a simple, almost maintenance-free platen drive that is easily and quickly adjustable for highest quality welding of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. The unique, patented, STRYCOMATIC drive provides the following adjustments, which can be logged and re-established precisely at anytime:
  • Widely adjustable push-up pressure
  • Adjustable flashing speed
  • Adjustable flashing distance
  • Adjustable upset distance
  • Precise adjustment of upset point
  • Very accurate current cut-off adjustment
  • Original and final die operations can be conviently set
  • Fully automatic or semi-automatic welding sequence
    are selected with console switches
  • Individual clamping control with separate foot switches; or closing of both clamps with one foot switch are selected with a console switch

BASIC SPECIFICATIONS APPLYING TO ALL WELDER SIZES

FRAME:
The main frame is a fabricated steel, stress relieved unit that is reinforced at all stress points.

CLAMPS:
The standard clamps are air operated, and may be either the alligator acting, vertically acting or horizontally acting. Each clamp is closed by its own foot switch. Each clamp may be opened, for reclamping, with a pushbutton on the operator's console. The clamp force available is suited to the size and type of the material to be welded. Manually operated clamps are available, if desired.

TRANSFORMER:
The transformer available for any primary line voltage is single-phase and water cooled. The primary coils are wound of ribbon copper with suitable taps to give the proper number of heat regulation steps. Secondaries are cast copper and provided with a non-corrosive water cooling tube.

PLATENS:
The platens are made of cast manganese bronze. The movable platen is mounted on steel side rails which run the full length of the welder. They are suspended at each end in three adjustable roller bearing guides. These adjustments at each corner, front and back, permit aligning the clamps or dies vertically, horizontally and transversally.

PLATEN DRIVE:
The platen travel and upset are operated by an air cylinder, acting through a crank lever to increase the force, restricted by a motor driven cam which controls the acceleration. The cam is driven by a variable speed motor (to provide variable flashing speeds), working through a worm reduction unit. Dynamic motor braking prevents over travel.

CONTROLS:
A variety of controls is offered, to suit the individual application. Controls may vary from a simple magnetic contractor to an elaborate, fully automatic sequence control.

PLATEN OPENINGS:
The original and final openings between platens and dies are adjustable on threaded linkages at the right-hand side of the welder. The amount of adjustment available is greater than necessary for any work within the range of the welder.

WORK STOPS:
In most cases, adequate clamping force holds the work pieces from slipping during upset. Where work stops are required, they are available at extra cost.

The above capacity figures are for steady production welding.  In most cases, they can be exceeded materially, for occasional welds, by slowing down the cam drive motor speed and increasing the upset force air to above 90 p.s.i. The equipment will not be harmed by exceeding its rated capacity when operated on an intermittent of low production basis.

SPECIAL FEATURES AVAILABLE

In addition to the standard features listed above, Stryco AF Series Welders can be equipped with a number of special labor saving or convenience attachments. These include:

  • Annealing controls, which may involve an automatic change of heat setting, plus timing; and may include automatic platen spacing change.

  • An upset stripping mechanism, automatically removes most of the upset material from a flash weld, an instant after its completion. This requires special clamp jaws, knife-shaped steel edges next to the weld, there is an additional "push-up" force and timing, which carries the stripping knives across the weld joint while it is still white hot.

  • Special dies, built to suit a particular extrusion or roll-formed part shape, including auxiliary clamping means, are available when needed.

  • A workpiece end locator, automatically moves in between the clamp jaws, each time the movable platen returns to the start position. The workpiece ends are easily and rapidly centered between the clamps. As soon as the clamps are closed, and before the platen motion starts, it is automatically withdrawn.

A SPECIAL WORD TO OUR PROSPECTIVE CUSTOMERS

Stryco resistance welders of every kind, as well as many special purpose welders, have been onthe market for more than fifty years. During that period, we have encountered and solved the problems involved in almost any imaginable assembly of parts formed from sheet metal or wire. We do not claim to know everything, but there is a strong possibility that your problem may be one with which we are already familiar, and for which we may have developed a satisfactory solution.

This background of experience is available to you. We urge you to bring your assembly and/or welding problems to us. In the unlikely event that we are unable to give you the solution you desire, we almost certainly can direct you to someone who can do so.
